Abstract

Data from several studies suggest that the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with diabetes has been declining since the 1990s. Despite this trend, people with diabetes continue to have a two- to fourfold higher risk of major CVD events and CVD mortality compared to those without diabetes. Furthermore, an increased prevalence of the co-morbid conditions of hypertension and dyslipidemia, along with poor rates of control, underline the need for structured public planning and measures for prevention and proper management of diabetes and co-morbid diseases.
